We continued our journey on Austrian territory. I've visited the "capital of Tyrol" a year ago, and the city's tram network was still under construction, especially at the square in front of the railway station.
The new station building (on the right-hand side) was already completed, but the new tram terminus was not.
Like Linz and Graz, Innsbruck is a city of all-over-ad trams, like this one. And they keep their advertisments for years!
Number 75, built by Lohner features an ad painted (glued?) over the original red+cream livery of the city.
More Lohner built...
... tramcars in the inner city. Note that their first door is only half-width!
Number 31 is ex-Bielefeld (Germany). It used to be an eight-axle car, but its middle piece found new usage in the eight-axle cars of the Stubaitalbahn.
The interior...
... and the driver's cab of such a car. Note the double-width first door!
Number 75 at Bergisel, terminus of route 1. Route 6 starts from here...
... passing by Alpine valleys...
... through forests...
... before reaching Igls. Number 51, also ex-Bielefeld, but still an eight-axle car, seems to be a steady vehicle on this route: I have photographed it at the same spot last year, too!
The interior of such a car...
... and he driver's cab. First I thought it was driven with the pedals, then I realized, the the main controller switch is the lever to the left. Forward is "accelerate", backwards is "brake".
The typical DÜWAG-folding door.
Starting back to the city...
... then starting back again to Igls. Route 6 is mainly a one-track forest railway with passing loops, and operated with tramcars. Well worth a visit!
We (that's me and my girlfriend) have been able to catch the last train of the Stubaitalbahn that went all the way up to Fulpmes and then back to the city,so that was our evening programme.
It was already getting dark by then, and on the way back to the inner city we were caught by a storm. It was raining cats and dogs, thunder rumbled, lightnings have illuminated the sillhouettes of the Alps - it was a remarkable experience. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to be there (and that inside the tram:)!
